Plants: Buffalo Grass

Anisgvti

Buffalo Grass is an indigenous plant that thrives mostly in the North American prairies.  It is known for its resiliency to survive harsh, dry summer climates and cold and windy climates in the winter. The only true indigenous warm season turf, Buffalo Grass once served as the primary food source for the American Buffalo when huge herds roamed the prairies.

Native Americans used fire to enrich prairie ecosystems and, as a result, Buffalo Grass has adapted to grassland fires and grows better after fire due to the deep root system (stolon buds) of each plant.

Lorene Dywater, Cherokee National Treasure, was acknowledged in 1995 in National Geographic as the only Cherokee citizen making traditional buffalo grass dolls.
